Get Certified & Expand Your Skills at Hōʻike

To access any of our media production classes, you'll begin with the Producer Certification Course—your starting point to becoming a certified Hōʻike producer. Once certified, you’ll unlock a range of additional courses designed to help you build your skills in areas like storytelling, editing, and camera operation.

Want to finish fast? We also offer monthly group certification sessions on weekends, so you can complete the entire course in just one day.

UPCOMING

  • Focus: This class covers all aspects of video production, including camera and tripod set-up and operation, microphones, and editing.
    Length: 6-8 hours. 
    Description: Students will learn how to properly set up and operate Sony 4K camcorders and tripods, as well as how to capture clean, professional audio using different types of microphones. Students will also learn to edit with Final Cut Pro. This includes importing and cutting footage, adding text, transitions, and music. Students will produce a short video to air on Hō'ike Community Media to obtain certification.
    Access Granted: Students who complete this class will become certified producers and have full access to Hō’ike’s services including checking out video equipment, edit bays, and reserving the studio. Students are also able to take more advanced editing classes including Green screen and Multicam editing.

  • Focus: Filming and editing professional content using a smartphone
    Length: 4 hours over 2 classes
    Description:
    This badge blends mobile journalism with social media-savvy editing. Students will learn how to capture high-quality video and audio using their smartphones, covering framing, lighting, mic techniques, and mobile stabilization. They'll also be trained to edit their content using apps like CapCut, mastering effects, subtitles, and audio tools for short-form storytelling.
    A key focus will be on formatting: students will practice shooting both vertically for reels (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts) and horizontally for use in Hōʻike’s broadcast programs and The Hōʻike Weekly. Participants will also learn the difference in audience and tone between social and cable platforms.
    Access Granted: Graduates may submit smartphone-produced content for Hōʻike’s cable broadcast, including The Hōʻike Weekly, or for digital/social media platforms managed by the organization.

  • Focus: Mastering foundational equipment skills
    Length: 2–2.5 hours
    Description:                                
    This extra class introduces students to the core tools of video production. Participants will learn how to properly set up and operate cameras and tripods, as well as how to capture clean, professional audio using different types of microphones. The class also covers best practices for equipment handling, safety, and care.

  • Focus: Fundamentals of lighting for production
    Length: 1–1.5 hours
    Description:
    This class covers basic lighting principles for both studio and field production. Students will explore how to use portable lighting tools, reflectors, and natural light effectively. Topics include three-point lighting, avoiding harsh shadows, and lighting for different environments and skin tones.

Programming Policies – Quick Guide

At Hōʻike, we welcome our community to create and share stories on Cable Channel 54. Here’s what you need to know before you start producing.
This quick guide is here to make things simple, but for full details, please see our complete Programming Policies or contact Hōʻike staff with questions.

    • Community-focused programs that share ideas, culture, and information

    • Web addresses and phone numbers in credits

    • Showing books, CDs, or related items as part of your program content

    • Sponsors acknowledged at the beginning and end of your program in the standard Hōʻike format

    • Commercials, ads, or product endorsements

    • Calls to action like “Buy now!” or “Shop at Joe’s”

    • Business hours, prices, or sales promotions

    • Slanderous, libelous, obscene, or unlicensed content

    • Producers are responsible for all legal rights (music, video, releases, permissions, etc.).

    • By submitting your program, you accept full responsibility for its content.

    • Programs must meet Hōʻike’s technical standards and include a submission form.

    • Any content created with Hōʻike equipment must air at least three times on Cable Channel 54 and comply with all programming rules.

  • Explicit content can only air during safe harbor hours (10 pm – 5 am) and must include a viewer advisory.

    • Producers keep full copyright to their programs.

    • Hōʻike has the right to air content for up to three years unless otherwise agreed.

  • Hōʻike does not pre-screen programs. If a complaint comes in, staff will review and may escalate it to a committee if needed.
