Kauaʻi Voices: Ōpala Art: Turning Beach Plastic into Powerful Art | Allegra Scribner

Kauaʻi Voices, created by Hōʻike Staff Producer Smeeta Narang, features Allegra Scribner, the artist behind Ōpala Art, who shares how marine debris collected from Kaua‘i’s beaches becomes powerful works of environmental art. What began as casual beachcombing turned into a mission to raise awareness about ocean plastic pollution through creativity and community engagement.

Her meticulous process transforms bottle caps, nets, and microplastics into wave sculptures, honu, and vivid mosaics that make viewers stop, look closer, and ask: What is this really made of? Through workshops, public exhibits, and hands-on education, Allegra inspires a new generation to think critically about consumption and sustainability.

Talkin’ Trash – Ep. 9 | How to Recycle Right on Kauaʻi (and Cash In)

In this special episode of Talkin’ Trash, Max takes us along for a real-life recycling run — sorting cans, bottles, glass, and cardboard at home, then heading to the drop-off and redemption centers. Island School students visited Hōʻike Kauaʻi Community Media Studios for a special field trip — and got hands-on experience producing their very own Public Service Announcement (PSA). From planning and storyboarding to filming and editing on iPads, these students worked like a real film crew to bring their message to life.
